Local Boy Shortens Own Education to 1.5 Weeks Through Whining, Crying

We are having some serious problems getting The Son to go to school. It's gotten to the stage where he starts crying when he wakes up and sees that it is morning already. Any mention of school and he starts wailing. When we arrive at the school, the teacher opens the main door before we are even nearby because they can all hear the banshee from inside way waay in advance.

Prior to that, all of us at home get to enjoy almost 1.5 hours of screaming, argumentative resistance. "I don't want to go school! I don't yike it! I don't want see friends! Don't want see teacher! Don't want play. with. toys in school!" He will not allow us to do anything that could in any way advance the sequence of events leading up to his arrival in school, so it was quite a struggle this morning getting him to change his diaper, change out of pajamas and eat his breakfast. We gave up trying to put on his shoes so the banshee arrived barefoot. If it were left to me, the banshee would arrive in pajamas, wearing last night's diaper which will have a little something extra inside to freshen the air.

Given that I am the manager of the "Get Son To School" project, I am fully resolved to continue this course of action until HE LOVES SCHOOL. Some people send their kids to 4 different types of classes. God forbid I cannot get my kid to attend the same one class for 3 hours each day. The fees cost almost as much as our mortgage in the first year. HE WILL ATTEND AND HE WILL LOVE IT.

Husband on the other hand is starting to crack under the relentless a.m. whining. We've already had 1.5 weeks of this and it's just getting worse. Now The Son only wants to have "nighttime" (because there's no school at nighttime). We've had an internal discussion and he has suggested that if the nonsense continues beyond Friday, we'll take him out of school.

I have mental visions of a 21-year old loafing around the house, watching Barney and sipping Milo from a packet, whilst the MOE officers come and take me away for failing to register my son for school.

This might seem a bit harsh... but did you try giving The Son one tight slap?

It isn't abuse if it's used for a good cause.

Get him some Vampire teeth and tell him he can bite whomever he wants to.

Or home-schooling - hey one of you is a teacher!

My dad used to drive home from work during lunch hour just to throw me up the school van. Yes, throw. I used to wail my eyes out and cling onto my grandmother because I did not want to go to school. I found out years later that my dad would quietly follow the van to school to check on me and realise that I'd be playing happily with my classmates the moment I get to school :)

maybe he's afraid of getting bitten again?

(btw, did the other kid's parent ever apologise?)

That's hilarious. I used to do that till I was primary one. But see... I'm now going to school like I'm supposed to! It's a phase that all kids and parents get through I think.

I like E@L idea...but I bet if you follow him he probably is having a good time as well.

And they say it takes 21 days for something to become a habit...so you need to fight the fight a bit longer. :-)

Keep your cool...I sent a wailing baby to daycare for at least 3-4 weeks last year when he was 18 mth.Even after 1-2 mths, he didn't look like he was happy yet.

It will pass, believe it. Remember, they are suppose to know division, multiplication and FRACTIONS by K2, so little R has no business not going to school NOW!

And by gosh, either you are living in a hut or something with a small little tiny mortage, but what kind of childcare charges like that!

Hey, my son just started attending school this year too. He goes and comes back in the school van. A couple of weeks before he started, we already got him excited about sitting on "Fillmore" (the van in Disney cars) so he had no problems going up the van from day 1. Even waved at me from the van window. Followed in my car and accompanied him through school the first 3 days. After that he was fine. Even came back to report who cried in school, but told me he did not cry :). But it is most difficult getting him to wake up by 7.15am every morning to have his breakfast and get ready for the van which comes at 8.15am (school starts at 8.30am). Minx (can't remember my password)

E@L/ Mr Scary Feets: That sounds really kinky. How is your rug?

Ene: Was very touched by what your dad did. That is the sweetest thing!

Anon2: He forgot he got bit by a girl the same evening. Said it was a mosquito. We did get an apology note fr the mother of the girl the very next day.

Indy: The Husband will crumble way before then. I hope they manage to squeeze in fractions and calculus before we have to pull him out.

Earthtone: S$1,320 for 2 months. Just found out this morning (almost fainted). But it's not as bad as I thought.

Minx: Oh my God. You actually get him to school in time. We start at 8.30 am too, but I only get him there at 9 am. It's. just. too. unspeakably. early.

you might feel better to know that your son's preschool is a bargain compared to the prices here.

well, my son cried every morning during the 'hand-over' for exactly one month when he first started school (which was 3 1/2 years ago :P)
So good luck!!
